Koalas are as big as a jellybean when they are born. They are called a joey. The joeys live only in a mommy’s pouch for seven months. When they come out of the pouch, they are a year old. When the koalas are all grown up, they move away from their mamas. Koalas eat eucalyptus leaves, but other animals can’t because the leaves are poisonous to other animals. Koalas sleep for 22 hours a day. That’s a really long time! Koalas have six thumbs to grip things and a comb on their back feet to help them groom themselves. Koalas live in Australia. They live in forest areas in trees. Lately, there are a lot of fires and koalas are losing their habitat. Koalas are getting endangered. Some people are helping them to stay alive still.
